Distance and time

What four hours allow, driving included

Between Paris and Versailles, the route planner gives about 20 to 30 km and 40 to 52 minutes on the road depending on where you start, with no tolls. These are indications, not guaranteed times: leaving at the height of the rush hour makes the drive longer. Of the four hours in the package, the rest of the time is spent at Versailles.

That is a good fit for the palace and the gardens beside it. It gets tight if you also want the Trianon estate, a 30-minute walk from the palace through the park. For a full day, or to combine Versailles with somewhere else, book a private driver by the hour instead. The question is covered in detail in Versailles in half a day: are 4 hours enough?

Before you book

Opening days, tickets, drop-off point

  • Closed on Mondays

The palace opens every day except Monday, and also closes on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May. Pick your date accordingly.

  • Tickets not included

Our price covers the car and the waiting, not admission. The gardens are free to enter, except on fountain-show and musical-garden days; for everything else, entry conditions are on the palace website.

  • Drop-off on Place d'Armes

The palace's main entrance is through the Cour d'Honneur, from Place d'Armes. The driver leaves you there and collects you at the time you settled on.

Opening times change with the season and with events: check them on the Palace of Versailles practical information page before setting your departure time; closing days checked on 18 October 2026.

No grey areas

The driver drives and waits; the visit is yours

Your driver will

  • Collect you from your address in Paris, child seats fitted.
  • Drop you off as close to the palace entrance as possible.
  • Wait throughout your visit, at no extra cost within the four hours; beyond that, extra time is priced in advance.
  • Drive you back to the Paris address of your choice.

Your driver won't

  • No commentary on the palace, the gardens or their history.
  • No entry with you into the palace or the park.
  • No tickets or queue-jump passes: book those with the palace.
An honest comparison

Third-party prices checked on 12 October 2026 (platforms and shuttle) and on 18 October 2026 (Île-de-France Mobilités 2026 fares).

In practice: for two people with time and good legs, the RER C is by far the cheapest option in the table. Our package is for those who want a stated length of time, their hotel door as the starting point and a car waiting outside the palace, especially as a family or a group.

With children

Versailles with kids

The palace and its gardens mean a lot of walking; children's energy is better spent on the visit than on train changes. Tell us each child's age when you ask for a price: the driver brings the right seat, infant carrier, child seat or booster, and fits it, at no extra cost. In the van, the pushchair rides in the boot and is waiting when you come out.

Other days out with a driver

Versailles half-day with a driver: frequently asked questions

How much is a half day at Versailles with a private driver?

For the whole car, VAT included: E-Class sedan for up to 3, €310; V-Class van for up to 7, €375; S-Class, €459. It covers the drive from your address in Paris, the waiting on site and the drive back, over 4 hours, for the whole car.

Are four hours enough to see Versailles?

For the palace and the gardens around it, yes, if you keep to a plan: each drive takes about 40 to 52 minutes according to the route planner, and the rest of the time is spent on site. The Trianon estate is a 30-minute walk from the palace; if you want to see everything, hiring a driver by the hour gives you more room. If your visit runs beyond four hours, extra time is priced in advance and confirmed before the ride.

Is the palace open every day?

No. The Palace of Versailles is closed on Mondays, and also on 25 December, 1 January and 1 May. Opening times vary with the season: look them up on the official Palace of Versailles website when you choose your date.

Are admission tickets included in the price?

No. The package covers the car, the driver, the waiting and the child seat. Any admission (palace, Trianon, shows) is booked and paid for with the palace.

Where does the driver drop us off?

As close as possible to the main entrance, on Place d'Armes: you enter the palace through the Cour d'Honneur. The driver collects you there at the time you settled on, or somewhere else if you arranged it in your request.

Does the driver show us round the palace?

No. The driver takes you there, drops you off, waits with the car and brings you back, with no commentary on the palace or its history and does not go in with you: the visit is yours.

Can we start from the airport instead of Paris?

The package starts from an address in Paris and returns there. To go straight from Roissy to Versailles, to your hotel for example, the CDG → Versailles transfer has its own fixed price.

Can I cancel the Versailles half-day?

Yes, free of charge up to 24 hours before the pick-up time.
